Raised in the horse capital of Portugal, Nuno has been passionate about horses from a very young age. Though classically trained in Dressage, Nuno has spent his early years involved in Stadium Jumping, Endurance racing and Horseball, a popular European equine sport.
Following in his brother's footsteps, Nuno came to the US and begun working at a racetrack in California. Quickly finding his niche, he rode for top trainers Laura De Seroux, and Neil Drysdale. He also worked as an assistant trainer for Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel. During his time spent at the racetrack, Nuno rode Horse(s) of the Year and Breeders Cup winners such as Azeri and Ghostzapper. Though he loved the track, Nuno enjoyed afternoons in California training show horses.
After traveling the East Coast racing circuit, meeting his wife, and making a move to Maryland in 2010, Nuno decided to return to his roots. He wanted to focus on his true passion which was Dressage. Creating Santos Sport Horses has allowed him to share his passion with his students and horses. He now enjoys a daily balance of instruction and riding. Nuno's training method is based on a solid foundation of dressage work. He focuses on strengthening, balancing, and correcting the horse.
Nuno has enjoyed great success with imported 7-year old Hanoverian, De Kilconor. Nuno also has a fondness for Portuguese Lusitanos and has imported a number of them for clients and for himself. Nuno enjoys having a wide variety of clients and horses. He has a particular love for Thoroughbreds though. He loves their athletic nature that allows them to excel in many equine disciplines. His unique experiences and achievements with them have given him great success. Thoroughbreds have allowed him to participate in events such as, the Retired Racehorse Project Makeover Challenges, and Maryland Horse Trials. One of Nuno's past OTTB gelding Ken's Kitten, is showing now showing at Prix St. Georges. Nuno has also recently won at the United States Eventing Championships held in Kentucky. In the championship he rode Perpetual Optimism who won High point Thoroughbred. Apart from eventing, Nuno has also recently won Dressage at Devon with Gaio Do Zambujal.
Nuno continues to learn and improve as a rider and instructor. He has attended clinics taught by Boyd Martin, and trains with Linda Zang on a regular basis. He continues to grow and learn as a rider and instructor everyday.
